What to do on Maha Shivratri?

Most Hindus begin their day with fasting promise. They take bath and apply sandalwood powder as part of cleansing. New clothes are essentially drawn for the occasion. Vibhuti is applied on the forehead and arms. Chanting of Shiv Chalisa and Shiv aarti is done in the morning to appease Lord Shiva and his followers. Triundura is made on the forehead to signify the presence of Shiva in every soul. Wearing rudraksha armlet and necklace are common practise.

Nishita Kala is the ideal time to perform this maha shivaratri Puja. Lingodbhava pujan is a major ritual associated with Maha Shivaratri. Shiv lingam is the most sacred place to offer the prayers on this day. Holy water, bael leaves, dhatura flowers and milk are poured on the Shiv ling as part of the ritual. Bholenath is invoked through feeding of serpents and cows. Bulls are decorated with colourful clothing to invite Shiva on top of them.

Meditation and transcendental penance are considered to be fruitful on this day. Women who wish for a husband like Shiva pray religiously and with determination. Mahamritunjaya mantra is the most iconic of compositions penned by Ravana dedicated to Lord Shiva. Kailash, Kashi Vishwanath, Maha Maheshwar, Trakeshwar, Triyambakeshwar, Omkareshwar and Pashupatinath temple are visited by millions of Shiv devotees on Mahashivratri.
